Saber (to know) · Present

By TutorLily Editorial Team · Last updated

Saber in the Spanish present (presente) is: yo sé, tú sabes, él/ella/usted sabe, nosotros/as sabemos, vosotros/as sabéis, ellos/ellas/ustedes saben. The present of saber expresses current factual knowledge: 'sé la respuesta' (I know the answer), 'sabes hablar francés' (you know how to speak French). The yo form 'sé' carries a diacritic accent to distinguish it from the pronoun 'se'.

Tip

Working with the present

Spanish uses the present tense more broadly than English does. "Estudio español" can mean "I study Spanish," "I am studying Spanish," or "I do study Spanish" — context decides. The biggest stumbling block for English speakers is the yo form of irregular verbs (hago, tengo, doy, voy, soy). Memorise those individually; the other persons usually follow regular patterns.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do you conjugate saber in the present tense?
Saber in the present is: yo sé, tú sabes, él/ella/usted sabe, nosotros/as sabemos, vosotros/as sabéis, ellos/ellas/ustedes saben. Only the yo form 'sé' is irregular — every other person follows the regular -er pattern.
What's the difference between saber and conocer?
Saber = to know facts, information, or how to do something ('sé la respuesta', 'sé nadar'). Conocer = to know people, places, or things by familiarity ('conozco a Juan', 'conozco Madrid'). Use saber for knowledge you can state; use conocer for acquaintance you can experience. Mixing them is one of the top-3 Spanish learner confusion points.
Why does 'sé' have an accent?
Spanish uses a diacritic accent ('tilde diacrítica') to distinguish 'sé' (I know — verb) from 'se' (reflexive pronoun: 'se lava' = he washes himself). The pronunciation is identical — the accent exists purely for written clarity. Other diacritic pairs follow the same rule: sí/si, tú/tu, él/el, dé/de.
